Sewing Table Finished

BEFORE

So....my friend Mary painted my table for me. I showed her the pictures I had and while we were discussing it, we decided to go a totally different route. Red is the color of my daughter's new sewing table. It turned out really cute. Mary from Divine Inspirations www.paintpalettecolors.blogspot.com is an amazing artist, I've talked about her before on my blog.
AFTER
She created the perfect red color for the room the table is going to be in. The red really spruced it up and makes it look so much friendlier. Kaarin is going to LOVE it, especially when she unfolds it and her new sewing machine is attached!

Thank you Mary!

Guest Room

My guest room is finally finished. I've been so busy over the past few months with clients that I've waited on my house for last. Here are a few pictures of the finished room. Of course, I say "finished" but at my house NOTHING is ever finished. I love to change things around, move things into other rooms, etc. that's the fun part of design. My clients like to say that once I leave, they are done with that room but when you are a decorator, you are never done decorating your own home....it's a joy to change it up all the time.

The pillows on the bed were tapestries that I found at a flea market and had made into pillows. I painted the painting above the bed and thought that the rings on top of the painting added some whimsy. I found this chair at a thrift store and loved its form. I had bits and pieces of fabric and had the chair recovered to work in the room. It has an ottoman too.

Rope covered candlesticks above the armoire didn't need candles because of their fun shape. The glass piece in the middle is a light fixture I found at a garage sale and it works perfectly with the colors in the duvet cover. I painted this armoire black (found it a Home Depot for $100) and sanded it down and rubbed it with a burnt umber glaze.
This floral tapestry was done by my husbands grandmother. My daughter Kaarin is named after her. The black matted photography is from a calendar I bought when I was in England visiting my family. My grandparents lived in a beautiful place called Cornwall where the cottages and ocean are stunning. They had a house right on the sea just like the picture. Growing up, I lived in a thatched house just like the top picture.

I always try to fill my rooms with beautiful things but things that have history and a story to tell. This makes it feel like YOUR home. Others will enjoy learning a bit about you from seeing the things you have and have collected over time.

I love the cheer and brightness of this room. Now all I need are some guests! Hmm...maybe not.... I think I'll check into the room myself, lock the door and curl up with the down comforter and read a few magazines. Who needs a hotel when you can do it at your own house.

Collection of Keys

Since my logo is a key "The KEY to your decorating needs" I've decided to start collecting old keys. I usually rebel against any kind of collection. Don't know why but maybe it's because most things that are a collection gather dust and look cluttered. However, I figured if I collect big keys they will make a statement. I'm sure I'll find more at thrift stores, garage sales, etc. I especially love the old antique keys but would love to find some really modern ones too.

Bishop's Castle in Colorado

Jim Bishop starting building the Bishop Castle in 1969. What was going to be a stone cottage turned into a castle when friends told Bishop that that's what his cottage looked like. Now, almost 40 years later, the Bishop Castle stands 160 feet tall, has a fire-breathing dragon chimney, a Great Hall where different events and fund-raisers can be held, and the beginnings of the castle wall which is currently under construction.

While visiting Bishop's Castle, I couldn't help but take close up pictures of the great architecture and all the textured elements. While my family was busy climbing the castle, exploring all the nooks and crannies, I was enamored with the beauty of each stone and metal piece that was layed by hand by this incredibly talented man. I figured I would one day use it for a client or myself. I've decided to frame some of the below pictures. I'll crop some of them and others I'll leave as is. I'm going to matte them with a white matte and use a black frame. It should be stunning. A great way to get artwork with personality. Especially if it's a place you have visited and have a memory of.

Sewing Table

My daughter is turning 12 in March and we have purchased her a sewing machine. I found this really cute sewing table (it folds out on both sides) and know she will love to have a place to lay out all her sewing stuff. Right now it has a "Grannie's attic" look so I am going to paint it to look much more "trendy" for her. The following are some of the paint techniques I am thinking of. Let me know which one you like.
I'll post the end result!

How Lucky Am I!!! Pajama Party Diva's

Last weekend I hosted a pajama party at my house just to celebrate my friends!
Everyone is talking these days about our economy being so bad and my friends and family members are losing jobs left and right. My friends have always been important to me but now more than ever. Things get hard in our lives and we have so many struggles. I feel blessed to have been given such quality friends. Some have been clients that have turned into friends. The last few years, life got so hectic that I stopped entertaining as much as I wanted to. This year I decided that I was going to make being together with friends and family in my home a priority. This was the first of many parties this year to celebrate the people I'm so lucky to have all around me. So many of us are running around busy...busy....busy.....it's so nice to stop....stop.....stop......and appreciate......appreciate......appreciate.....what we have!

I wasn't sure if everyone would actually show up in their pajamas but they did! We had such fun just laughing and enjoying each other. Events like these are such an easy way to sit and take a moment with those you love. It took some planning on my part but everyone brought their favorite munchie and we ordered pizza. We stayed up late catching up with each other and some even spent the night.
WOW, what a fun evening. FRIENDS MAKE LIFE WORTH LIVING!

Ladies Retreat Cross

Thought you'd enjoy seeing this cross that I made for a ladies retreat. The form of the cross was created with big pieces of foam cut to the shape of the cross. I then sprayed insulation foam on it to give it the textured look. I let it dry overnight and then cut it down to the shape I wanted it to be. I then painted it to look old. On the last day of the retreat the ladies turned the cross around and on the on the back side I had painted it white and put tons of glitter on it to make it shine. It really was the focal point of the stage and was enjoyed by all.

Broken Pieces

I found the below picture from many years ago and remembered this treasure....

My step mom opened her Kitchen cupboard on Christmas Day and something you dread happened. The shelf that all her beautiful china was on broke and all her china came tumbling to the floor. We all just stood there and didn't know what to say. She was so sad because she loved this china so much. As we were sweeping it all up I said "don't throw this away, I want to make something out of it". She said, whatever...I can't see how this could be anything".
For her birthday my sister and I gave her this vase that we made from the broken china pieces. It blessed her socks off and now she get lots of comments on the vase and best of all she has a story to tell.

While we're speaking of china, here's a great idea to decorate a plate for a dinner party. I did this for a Christmas Party but it could be done for a birthday or any special occasion. I placed a doily on the plate and sprinkled cocoa powder on the plate, removed the doily and there you have it!

The theme of my table for this Christmas Party was "For the love of chocolate". I made a chocolate tree for the middle of the table and hung crystal ornaments from it. It was a hit and smelled incredible.

Flip That House

Today I met with a client and gave her a "walk thru" for a house she is going to purchase and flip. Clients love this service because it allows them to get a decorator's ideas. They can make wise decisions and spend their money the best way possible. She wrote notes furiously and then she will run with the plan, using me as she needs me. I gave her suggestions about flooring, knocking down walls to open up space, paint colors, lighting suggestions, counter top color suggestions, exterior paint, landscaping ideas, curb appeal ideas, concrete stain colors, deck stain colors, fence colors and much more.
Call me if you have a need like this. Sometimes it's for your own home remodel. You are just stuck and need someone to give you a boost to get you started. Hiring a decorator will be the best decision you make at the beginning of any project. I can give you a vision and a plan that helps you stay focused and enables you to make your home look amazing.
Remember I can also stage any home to sell. Doing a "walk thru" for ideas on how to improve your home to sell is also one of my specialties.
Happy Decorating and Happy Valentines Day to you all!

Colorful Urban Girl

For Christmas one of my client's gave their daughter a gift certificate to spend 2 hours with me to brainstorm about ideas for her bedroom. What a fun idea for this cute 13 year old girl.
This room was our inspiration and we are going to try and replicate it. She also had the above poster in her room which she loves so we are going to frame it and incorporate it into the space. She would like to add an urban feel to this room so we are going to paint the ceiling grey and replace the bed in this picture with a couch/bed. She has some fun t-shirts with some of her favorite slogans so we are going to make them into pillows.

We had a lot of fun together and I sent them both she and her mom off to Ikea to start their shopping for the things I suggested. It will be a process from here but oh what a fun one this will be!

I found these cute boxes and I'm going to put them on a metallic shelf in her room so she can store all her jewelry, hair accessories, cd's, etc.
We also thought it would be fun to add her name in block lettering to her drapes.

Decorating kids rooms is so much fun because you can let your creativity go wild. You can also find some awesome things at garage sales and thrift stores. Adding a coat of paint to items can make it so whimsical and fun, fun, fun.

Volunteering at Grace

Today the girls and I served at Grace here in Grapevine. When I told the girls this morning what we were going to be doing, they were very hesitant. I often visit the Graceful Buys Store and they know all about that because we have found some great treasures there.
I told them that we were going to get to see behind the scenes as to how all those items get into that store. I explained to them the concept of a charity and how the $$$ from the store goes to about 1,500 families in Grapevine who really need it. We arrived at Grace's donation center and they showed us around. It was fascinating to see how many people it takes to run this charity. There were at least 40 volunteers there doing everything from accepting goods, sorting clothes, pricing, bagging toys, sorting linens, mending clothes, sorting books & videos and the list goes on and on. I had heard that they needed floral arrangements made and I thought the girls and I could have fun doing this. We actually did! We made about 20 arrangements all "using what they had". They had about 10 bins of greenery and floral stems. Now this could be overwhelming to some but because I LOVE to make something out of nothing we had a blast. The best part was we got to price everything and they got to add up how much each arrangement would sell for. They began to understand how it all worked and how their effort was going to contribute to a needy family. We had a great day serving together doing what we do best! Knowing someone else will enjoy them made us leave happy! The girls got in the car and said "can we do that every Saturday, that was fun?"

The pictures aren't the best because I had to use my cell phone. At least you get the idea.

They were so proud of their work.

Antlers

There are so many things you can do with antlers. These I found a while back and decided to put them in this floral arrangement. The arrangement is a little formal in it's design and adding the antlers adds an eclectic twist. The urn its in also makes it feel more casual because of it's "gardeny" feel. This room has a cow hide rug on the floor so the antlers are one more thing that pulls the room together. I realize that antlers aren't for everyone but thought you would enjoy some fun "eclectic ideas". These are a few I found. In the right home and place, these would be stunning focal points.

When you are "thrift " shopping try to find natural treasures. Adding a little rustic element to any style really changes it up and makes it noticed instead of typical.

Get inspired, happy treasure hunting! Think outside the box!
